MixRadio is a music streaming service that learns your tastes to offer you personalized new music to listen to. It was previously a Windows Phone exclusive app, but was sold to LINE, who have brought it to Android and iOS.
Mixes on and offline
To get started with MixRadio, you have to tell it something about your tastes. First you select your favorite genres, then artists you like from within those genres. It's easy, and MixRadio offers you a broad selection of popular artists from all genres to pick from. Once you're done, you can listen to My Mix, which has been created for you. You'll hear artists you picked alongside other artists MixRadio thinks you might like. If you don't like a song, simply tap the crossed heart icon and MixRadio won't play that song again. You can skip six song per mix - then MixRadio will suggest you listen to a different one.
To save your data, you can download any mix you like, and enjoy it at your leisure when you're not on WiFi. You can download up to four mixes, each around two hours long. They stay on your device for 30 days, after which you have to download them again.
Easy to use, gets better with time
MixRadio is easy to use, and offers a good range of popular music for you to listen to. Like other free services, you'll get ad breaks occasionally. The combination of curated and algorithm created mixes available is good. It doesn't beat Spotify for community or sharing, although you can share mixes you like via Twitter or Facebook. MixRadio is a personalized radio station, so you can't choose what to listen to beyond genres and general taste.
The only criticism we have of MixRadio is that if you have less mainstream tastes, it can be hard to tell the app. Most people will be fine with it, but if you're not into popular artists, you might not enjoy it so much.
If radio is what you're after, MixRadio is great. It's free, the download option is excellent, and it learns your tastes.
